Job Summary:
The Digital Collections Archivist is responsible for managing all aspects of the library's digital collections, including the acquisition, organization, preservation, and accessibility of digital materials. This role involves utilizing advanced archival techniques and technologies to ensure the long-term preservation and effective management of digital assets.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement strategies for the acquisition, organization, and preservation of digital collections in accordance with archival best practices and standards.
2. Collaborate with various stakeholders to assess, prioritize, and plan for the digitization of physical collections, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of digital materials.
3. Conduct research and analysis to identify potential sources for digital materials, establishing relationships with external organizations and individuals to expand the library's digital collections.
4. Evaluate and select appropriate hardware, software, and metadata standards for the digitization, description, and access of digital assets.
5. Create and maintain comprehensive documentation related to digital collections, including digitization procedures, metadata schemas, and preservation workflows.
6. Perform quality assurance checks on digitized materials to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established standards.
7. Develop and implement effective metadata schemas and descriptive practices, enhancing discoverability and retrieval of digital collections.
8. Collaborate with IT professionals to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of digital assets, including monitoring storage systems, managing backups, and implementing appropriate security measures.
9. Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and standards in digital archiving, continuously improving and updating digital collections management practices.
10. Provide training and guidance to library staff and researchers on best practices for accessing and utilizing digital collections.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
2. Proven experience in managing digital collections within a library, archive, or cultural heritage institution.
3. In-depth knowledge of archival principles, techniques, and best practices for the acquisition, organization, and preservation of digital materials.
4. Familiarity with digitization processes, including scanning, image editing, and optical character recognition (OCR).
5. Proficiency in metadata standards and schemas, such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, or PREMIS.
6. Strong understanding of digital preservation practices, including file formats, migration, and metadata preservation.
7. Experience with digital asset management systems (DAMS) and content management systems (CMS).
8. Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and evaluate potential sources for digital collections.
9. Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to maintain high-quality standards in digitization and metadata creation.
10. Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues related to digital collections.
11. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
12. Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality results.
